Held liable if someone gives out your phone number and has thousands of text messages sent?

I'm wondering about this because some "hacker" got Justin Bieber's phone number some months ago. He threatened to blackmail Justin, and so Justin responded by posting something to his Twitter along the lines of "Here's my number, text me :)" .... and put in the hacker's number instead of his own. Naturally, his fans spammed his extortionist's phone with text messages. If I remember right, the kid and his family had at least $10,000 worth of charges to pay because of it.

Is there any protection against that now? Or any way to prevent it, besides simply not giving out your number?Held liable if someone gives out your phone number and has thousands of text messages sent?
There should be. in this case, you would think there would be some sort of charge against Bieber, along with compensation for the victim. A second case with amendments might be needed for the initial "hacking, so you could speak. Not that i would know, this is just my opinion.Held liable if someone gives out your phone number and has thousands of text messages sent?
Nope, it's your name on the cell phone bill and so therefore you're liable for paying the bill.

Unless that is, you can manage to convince the cell phone company that you have this situation. That's a big IF.

Don't give out you number boys and girls! It can raise the possibility of this happening to you.
